As part of your remote monitoring program, you may be asked to complete a 1-Minute Sit-to-Stand Test (also called an Exertion Test). Follow the steps below to complete this test on the patientMpower app:

  1. Please ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone or tablet device before taking the test.

  2. Press the red ➕ button at the bottom of the screen and select Add Exertion Test.

  3. Read through the Welcome page to prepare for the test. You will need a straight-backed chair which has a flat, hard seat, no armrests and a 90° angle, such as a dining chair. You will also need your pulse oximeter device.

  4. Read through the instructions carefully on the next three pages. Once happy, press the Start button.

  5. You will first be asked to grade your level of shortness of breath and level of fatigue using the BORG scale. Answer the question as best you can and then press the Submit button.

  6. You will then measure your oxygen levels and heart rate using the pulse oximeter device. Make sure your hands are warm and dry. If they are cold, rub them together for a few minutes. Make sure all nail varnish has been removed from your nails and make sure you are sitting at rest. Place the device on the tip of your middle finger, with your palm facing up. Hold still as the measurement is being taken. If you are in the accepted % limits, you will be able to proceed and press Next. Keep the device on your finger for the duration of the test. If your readings are too low to start the test, take a break, rest and restart the test.

  7. You will then do the exertion test. Once you press Start, a timer will count down from 10 to allow you to prepare before the 1 minute test begins. Stand up from the chair until your legs are completely straight and make sure you do not use your hands or arms to help you. Then sit back down again - this counts as one repetition. Continue sitting up and down on the chair as many times as you can in one minute. Remember to keep track of how many repetitions you complete.

Note: Rest for a few seconds if you need to and then carry on if you can. Stop the test at any time if you feel unwell, have chest pain, dizziness or severe breathlessness. If your oxygen saturation levels fall, the app will vibrate and alert you with a noise.

  8. When prompted, record how many repetitions you completed during the test. You can now remove the device from your finger.

  9. You will then be asked again to grade your level of shortness of breath and level of fatigue. Answer these questions as best you can and then press the Submit button.

  10. Your One-Minute Sit-to-Stand test is now complete.
